Asbestos is a fibrous material which can resist heat and chemicals. It was commonly used in building materials between the 1950's-1980's. Many buildings constructed during that time may contain asbestos.
Asbestos can sometimes be found in the following areas:
- Roofing felt
- Floor tiles
- Textured ceiling and wall finishes (artex)
- Pipe insulation
- Gutters and rain water pipes
- Boilers and flues
- Bath panels
- Soffit boards
- Water feed tanks
You will not be at risk if the products are undisturbed, undamaged and in reasonably good condition.
Asbestos products may also be present in ironing boards, cookers, etc.
Surveys have been carried out in the general housing stock to identify asbestos. The majority of asbestos in our homes is low level and undisturbed will be of no danger to the residents. There are a number of garages which have a roof covering made from asbestos.
As Broxtowe Borough Council carries out improvements to it housing stock we will complete additional asbestos surveys, and we will remove any asbestos that will be affected.
