Taxi and minicab licences
- Becoming a Taxi Driver
  The Council issues a joint badge which authorises the driver to drive both hackney carriage and private hire vehicles. The badge is valid for one year. Applicants must have passed a Driving Standards Agency (DSA) taxi test and are required to pass a medical test and a topography test. Checks will also be made relating to the character of the applicant.

- Licensing a vehicle
  The Council issues licences for both hackney carriage and private hire vehicles. At the moment, the Council does not have any limit on the number of vehicles it licences. All vehicles must be covered by the correct documentation, ie vehicle excise licence, MOT testing certificate and insurance, and will be required to be examined at the Council's Works Depot at Kimberley at least once per year.

  Taxi ranks are provided by Broxtowe Borough Council under the Local Government Miscellaneous Provisions Act. This follows consultation with Nottinghamshire County Council as Highway Authority. Alternatively taxi ranks can also be provided by the Highway Authority via the Traffic Regulation Order.

- How long will the works take and will there be further disruption?
  Working in a town centre, where access to shops for both deliveries and customers has to be maintained is not easy. Works have to be carefully planned and can take longer than in an area which is less busy. The works are scheduled to be complete in November 2009, prior to the Christmas trading period starting.

- Use of Town Squares
  The Council encourages and manages the use of the town squares in Beeston, Eastwood, Kimberley and Stapleford for charitable and community events

- Was the scheme really needed?
  The current town centre paving is over 20 years old and was laid when Beeston was pedestrianised in the 1980s. Some recent maintenance work has been carried out to some areas, for example with part of the drainage channel being upgraded approximately 2 years ago, but the scheme has remained relatively untouched for over 20 years.

- What will the completed works look like and will the trees be replaced?
  A plan of the scheme can be downloaded from the right hand side. It is unfortunate that 9 trees had to be removed before works started, but they had been identified as having developed multiple defects. 7 Trees will be replanted of the type and variety which will be more suitable for the High Road environment. We have also worked with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to ensure we are identify the right type of tree species to be replanted, along with bug and bird boxes to encourage even more wildlife and bio-diversity in the town centre.

- What's the background to the works?
  A few years ago, Broxtowe Borough Council and its partners worked together to develop a master plan for the town centre, to ensure that we properly plan and try and influence the future of our town centre.

- What's the cost of the scheme?
  The overall works are costing approximately £570,000. The funding for this has been drawn from various sources and includes £80,000 from the Borough Council, with the remainder from Nottinghamshire County Council, Section106 monies paid by Tesco and the Regional Development Agency for the East Midlands. This funding arrangement helps to minimise the cost of the scheme on the local council tax payer by drawing in funding from outside the Borough.

- Trees in Private Ownership
  The Council has little authority over trees in private property. Still, we receive many calls each week from people with questions about their rights and responsibilities, usually regarding a neighbours tree. Mostly these are civil matters dealt with by common law with a few exceptions that have been addressed by parliament.

  Owners of Conservation Area protected trees have the right to apply for permission to undertake pruning works or fell a protected tree.

- Advice on Hiring Tree Work Contractors
  Pruning trees at any height or using dangerous tools are jobs that you should only consider using a skilled arborist (tree surgeon) for. As well as the safety aspect there is also the need to be confident that the operations being undertaken are in the tree's best interest too.

- Highway Tree Pruning
  Some trees, particularly ones along the highway in certain places, are in such a position as to require hard pruning to minimise disruption to the street or adjacent properties. These trees are pruned on a five years rotating schedule.

- The Maintenance of Trees in Public Areas
  Trees under control of the Local Authority are those on the highway and pedestrian areas (on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council) in parks and open spaces, along certain footpaths and bridleways and on council owned land e.g. housing.
