Photo Opportunities - National Tree Week - Broxtowe Borough
Posted 02/12/2008 - A target has been set to plant 100,000 trees over a 5 year period as part of Broxtowe Borough Council's Corporate Plan. These trees can be planted on parks/open spaces, school grounds, highway verges, private gardens, office grounds etc.

Already over 8,000 new trees have been planted and by the end of March the Council hopes to hit the year 1 target of 20,000. As part of National Tree Week a number of events have been organised to help swell this figures.
Monday 1 December: Brinsley Primary School and The Friends of Brinsley Headstocks joined the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe Councillor Sue Wildey, and officers from Broxtowe Borough Council to plant bulbs and trees at Brinsley Headstocks. The planting is part of a workshop organised by the Greenwood Community Forest Team.
Tuesday 2 December: 9.30am to 11.30am Templar Road Estate, Beeston. The Greenwood team have arranged for 2 groups of 30 children from John Clifford School to help plant trees and bulbs. The Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Longdon is coming to lend a hand at 10.00am. The planting provides the finishing touches to a neighbourhood pride scheme, funded by Broxtowe Borough Council that has included new bollards, street names, bedding displays and a small item of play equipment installed.
Wednesday 3 December: 10.45am to around 11.15am. Pupils from Year 6 at Fairfield Primary School will be planting spring bulbs in Queen Elizabeth Park next to their school. The event is part of Broxtowe Borough Council's funded "Broxtowe Education" project in conjunction with Groudwork Greater Nottingham.
Wednesday 3 December: 1.30pm to 2.30pm. Pupils from Bramcote Park Business and Enterprise College will be planting native trees in Bramcote Hills Park to improve their local environment with the help of British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV). (Meeting at main car park off Ilkeston Road at 1.15pm.)
Thursday 4 December: 11.00am. Priory RC School with help the Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Longdon will be planting trees and bulbs at Smithhurst Road, Giltbrooke.
Friday 5 December: 11.00am and 11.30am. Bramcote Hills Park Tree Planting event. Meet in the main car park near Coventry Lane. In recognition of the valuable and very mature trees to be found around the Green Flag award winning park. The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe Councillor Sue Wildey will plant a tree to mark Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday and then a special Ginkgo Biloba - Maidenhair Tree in the developing arboretum.
The tree planting target is challenging and the Council using Tree Week to promote its project and to find out where people think additional trees are needed. The public are encouraged to contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3649 with ideas for new tree locations and they will be added to the growing database. The Council does not have a specific budget for this project but can help identify various funding sources.
National Tree Week runs from 26 November - 7 December 2008 and was first introduced in 1975. National Tree Week is UK's largest tree celebration annually launching the start of the winter tree planting season.
