Sports Oscars

Posted 23/12/2008 - On Tuesday 16 December 2008 more than 300 people from the Broxtowe Borough's sports community descended on the Pearson Centre for Young People, Beeston for the annual Broxtowe Borough Sports Awards.

The event is the Broxtowe Sports Partnerships version of the 'Oscars'. Sporting video clips, musical jingles and dazzling displays entertained the audience between the different awards.

The Broxtowe Sport Partnership Celebration Evening is now in its fourth year. The event celebrates all the positive work that takes place in sport throughout the year. People of all ages, shapes and sizes attend the event and are recognised for their contributions and achievements in sport.

The events awards and winners included:

SPORTS PERSON OF THE YEAR
Samit Patel (Nuthall): Nottinghamshire and England Cricketer

SCHOOL SPORTS PERSON OF THE YEAR
Kelly Dreschler (Stapleford): England Ice Hockey Player

DISABLED SPORTS PERSON OF THE YEAR
Kyle Thompson (Bramcote Park School): Boccia Player

SPORTS COACH OF THE YEAR
Richard Collins (Chilwell): Chilwell Blades Fencing Coach

SPORTS CLUB OF THE YEAR
Beeston Hockey Club (Highfields nr Beeston): National Champions

SCHOOL SPORTS TEAM OF THE YEAR
George Spencer Girls Rugby Team: East Midlands Runners Up

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Kaye McKenzie (Stapleford): Stapleford Netball Club

SCHOOL SPORTS LEADER OF THE YEAR
Nathan Kirk (Stapleford): After School Sports Coaching

PRIMARY SCHOOL MOST ENTHUSIASTIC SPORTS PERSON OF THE YEAR
Doyle Hutchinson (Eastwood): Various Sports

SECONDARY SCHOOL MOST ENTHUSIASTIC SPORTS PERSON OF THE YEAR
Joseph Langford (Chilwell): Various Sports and Boys Brigade

SCHOOL INITIATIVE
Bramcote Park School (Andrea Kilbane): Girls In Sport

The event recognises achievement and congratulates all those people who take part in the various different aspects of sport. The awards are for achievement or involvement for those who are dedicated, committed or success in various aspects of sport.

Sport plays a positive role in the community, promoting role models and also health and well being in the Borough. The event is used to raise awareness of all the good work that takes place in the local sporting community each year, by bringing sporting achievements to everyone's attention.
