The Rainbow Gallery is set within Durban House Heritage Centre with the aim of providing access to all to stimulating and contemporary visual arts, whilst maintaining strong community links.

We are pleased to present our programme for 2010 which brings together a vibrant collection of contemporary and traditional art for you to enjoy.

The Rainbow Gallery is set within Durban House Heritage Centre a magnificent building with historic links to the writer and painter D.H. Lawrence.

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS:

Alan Clayden - Exploring Vietnam
Dates:Friday 18th June – Sunday 18th July 2010

Alan Clayden - Vietnam Returning to the gallery this year, Alan Clayden, a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, presents his own personal photographic journey exploring the people and landscapes of Vietnam, from Mekon Delta in the south, to the capital Hanoi City in the north.

Liz Emery
Dates:Friday 23rd July – Sunday 22nd August 2010

Liz Emery - Sherwood Forest Clearing Felt artist, Liz Emery's work is inspired by creative freedom offered by the unpredictable nature of the felt making process. Each piece is an individual experiment and much like a painter does with paint on a canvas Liz Emery uses the fibres of the wool to create texture and light within her works.

D.H. Lawrence Festival Exhibitions - Children & Young Person's Open Art Exhibition and The Big Draw

Dates:Tuesday 2nd September - Sunday 31st October 2010

As well as writing D.H. Lawrence also enjoyed to paint as a creative pursuit, often giving his paintings away to friends and family as gifts. In celebration D.H. Lawrence Heritage will be running an Open Young Persons Exhibition throughout September and events linked to The Big Draw, as part of the National Campaign for Drawing throughout October.

D.H. Lawrence Festival Exhibitions - Children & Young Person's Open Art Exhibition

Dates:Tuesday 2nd - Friday 24th September 2010

Children Painting As a teenager D.H. Lawrence would paint watercolours and often gave them to friends and family as gifts. This is the opportunity for budding young artists out there to create a piece of artwork especially for this real exhibition. 

There are 3 age ranges (5-7, 8-11 & 12-16 years old) and suggested categories to get you started.  Artwork will be displayed in the Rainbow Gallery at Durban House for the duration of the exhibition and you can forever claim to be an exhibited artist! 

FREE to enter, prizes will be awarded

Contact D.H. Lawrence Heritage for further details. Prizes will be awarded at a special award ceremony in the Rainbow Gallery on Sunday 26th September.

Exhibition Admission: Special admission charges apply - Under 16's FREE, Adults £1.50, Concessions £1.00.

D.H. Lawrence Festival Exhibitions - The Big Draw: Mums and toddlers get creative

Dates:Tuesday 5th - Thursday 14th October 2010

From his teenage years and throughout his life D.H. Lawrence loved to draw and paint. To celebrate D.H. Lawrence Heritage are hosting two events linked to the National Campaign for Drawing.

Got a toddler who forever wants to draw on walls?  Then let them draw on ours!  For two weeks babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers can come and get creative & messy on the walls of the Rainbow Gallery.  Equipment will be provided but supervision is essential. Mums, dads, grandparents, childminders, playgroups etc. – all welcome.

Time: Open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday, 10.30am until 4pm

Event Admission: Special reduced admission charges apply, Under 5's FREE, accompanying adults 50p. These admission charges only apply for the duration of the event.

D.H. Lawrence Festival Exhibitions - The Big Draw: Draw your Local Landscape

Dates:Tuesday 19th – Sunday 31st October 2010

The walls of the Rainbow Gallery will be a blank canvas for anyone and everyone to come and create their local landscape.  Draw your favourite outdoor spot, paint the house you were born in, sketch your family, or perhaps create an image of what your hometown looked like 100 years ago or will look in 100 years time.  This event is all about taking part and sharing your local landscape through drawing.

Open for all Ages/Abilities

Time: Open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday, 10.30am until 4pm

Event Admission: Special admission charge applies £1.00. These admission charges only apply for the duration of the event.

Justine Nettleton
Dates:   Friday 5th November – Sunday 19th December 2010

Justin Nettleton Painting Local artist, Justine Nettleton, will be showcasing her exclusive artwork collection of sunset and dusk views, inspired by the light and ambience of Long Eaton's historic West Park.

Opening Times

The Rainbow Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday:

  • April to October - 10am until 5pm
  • November to March - 10am until 4pm

Durban House Heritage Centre and the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum will also be open to the public during these times. The Rocking Horse Bistro, at Durban House, is open 11am until 3pm.

Accessibility

The gallery is fully accessible for disabled visitors.  Durban House Heritage Centre has designated disabled parking; a disabled access toilet and free wheelchair loan is available by pre-booking.
