Nottingham Canal

Suggested parking is at Coventry Lane adventure playground. From here walk south along Moor lane over railway and turn right at path junction. Cross Coventry Lane and follow the towpath.

The route is initially straightforward except at Trowell Garden Centre, where a signed route diverts the walker back to the towpath at Swansea Bridge and at the M1, where steps lead down and the trail passes beneath the motorway, to steps leading back up the opposite side.

Where open casting has destroyed the canal north of Awsworth, the route is less clear and there have been delays reinstating some rights of way: after the fishery near Bennerley Viaduct, pass through kissing gates and turn right after 50 metres. Before railway arch, turn left and keep at bottom of embankment and cross stile into willow holt. Keep close to railway fence, pass over stile onto stoned path and continue ahead through playing field. Turn left by pavilion into lane and left at end. Cross stile and go straight onto next stile. Turn right and follow road to junction, turn right and then left before dual-carriageway. At junction descend lane to left and turn right after crossing stile. The fenced alignment of the canal leads to the towpath.

Further on where the towpath ends, follow wide stoned path, which leads to Anchor Road. Follow lane to right and cross busy main road to Great Northern Basin. Return along the Erewash Canal towpath to just beyond the first lock after Gallows Inn and take path on left over railway bridge to Trowell and follow the road past the Festival Inn as far as the Nottingham Canal. Follow the towpath to the right (by passing beneath bridge) back to the car park.
