After finishing school, Councillor Derek Burnett BEM began working as a Plumbing and Heating Engineer before joining the Nottinghamshire Police in 1971 and retiring after 30 years' service in 2001.

As a teenager, Derek was a member of the Young Conservatives and since 2007; Derek has been a member of the Conservative Councillors Association. 

He was Chairman of Greasley Parish Council in 2005/06 and Chairman of Nuthall Parish Council in 2012/13. 

Derek currently sits on Various Committees for Broxtowe Borough Council and is currently Chairman of the Licensing and Appeals Committee and Chairman of the Alcohol and Entertainments Licensing Committee. He is also a member of the computer working group. 

A member of Nuthall West with Greasley and (Watnall) CAT.

Derek is also a caseworker, County Treasurer, Prison in Reach caseworker and County Training officer for SSAFA, The armed forces charity Nottinghamshire branch.

He is also the co-coordinator and an active first responder with Nuthall and District Community First Responder group working in partnership with the East Midlands Ambulance Service working every week end attending emergency and life threatening calls covering a vast area of Nottinghamshire and some parts of Derbyshire.

During School Term time, Derek and his wife Sonia run the Greasley Baby and Toddler group meeting up every Monday morning at Greasley Church Hall.

In what spare time Derek has, he enjoys sports like Formula one, Cricket and Swimming and spending time with his daughters and granddaughters.
