Food Hygiene Inspection
The borough of Broxtowe offers a number of exciting places to eat. Our aim is to ensure that food and drink sold in Broxtowe is clean and safe to consume.
The main thrust of our work is the enforcement of the Food Safety Act 1990. This involves the inspection and enforcement of hygiene standards in all food premises which are registered. Routine visits are made to premises ranging from the smallest individual traders to large food manufacturers. The frequency of the inspections is dependent on the level of risk associated with the premises type and they're past trading record.
'High Risk' premises
Include restaurants, takeaways, cafes, public houses serving food, nursing and residential care homes, schools, bakeries, butchers, supermarkets and mobile caterers. These premises are inspected either six monthly, annually or every eighteen months, although further visits may be carried out to investigate complaints or undertake sampling.
'Low' and 'other' risk premises
Include newsagents, small grocery stores, pharmacies, small post offices and garages. In general, these types of premises are inspected once every 2 or 3 years.
The purpose of the inspection:
to ensure that food is being handled and produced hygienically, thereby ensuring that food is safe to eat.
to look at the potential risk for food poisoning or injury as a result of foods consumption
to ensure food staff are trained in food hygiene and handling practices appropriate to their activity
to inspect the condition of equipment and premises
to ensure there are appropriate precautions to prevent pest infestation
to ensure that staff are aware of the importance of personal hygiene.
