What is Retirement Living?
Broxtowe Borough Council manages over 1,300 Retirement Living properties. Retirement Living offers comfortable and affordable housing, which provides support and safety, while still allowing you to maintain your privacy and independence.
A weekly service charge is applicable to residents living in Retirement Living and the amount is dependent on the type of scheme they live in.
What are the benefits of Retirement Living?
Retirement Living offers residents:
No on-site wardens, but support from a team of Retirement Living Officers for your comfort, health and wellbeing in your home
The choice of daily, weekly or monthly visits by a Retirement Living Officer
Most of the schemes have communal facilities, such as a lounge, laundry room, hairdressing room and enjoyable social activities for all residents to take part in
A Lifeline calling system linked to a 24 hour response centre, staffed by trained operators who are available seven days a week
Properties are located throughout the borough, close to social, transport and shopping facilities. Further details of schemes and their locations can be found on the Schemes in the Borough page
Please note that Retirement Living is all about helping residents to maintain their independence. Therefore we cannot help with:
Providing personal care, for example washing and dressing
Regularly preparing meals
Collecting shopping or prescriptions
Handling your personal finances
Providing health care and giving you medicines
Who can apply for Retirement Living?
Anyone approaching or over retirement age
Anyone with a degree of disability that makes their present home unsuitable and who would benefit from the support available in Retirement Living accommodation. In the case of couples, only one person needs to meet the criteria
How do I apply for Retirement Living?
To apply for Retirement Living, you will need to fill out a Homesearch application form, either online or by requesting a paper copy from the Allocations team.
What are Retirement Living Properties like?
Most Retirement Living properties are purpose built flats. There are two types of properties classified as 'A Schemes' and 'B Schemes'.
'A' Schemes -The majority of these schemes are 'corridor' schemes where your front door will open onto a secure corridor, which is linked to communal facilities. These schemes are ideal for residents who are looking for extra security and a more active social life
'B' Schemes -These schemes are a mixture of flats and bungalows where your front door will open onto the street. Some properties have their own garden. These schemes are ideal for residents who want that little bit more independence.
How do I end my tenancy?
You can end your tenancy by speaking to the Allocations team in the Housing section using the contact details below, who will take your details and ask you to complete a 'tenancy termination' form (which can either be posted or requested at Beeston Council reception). Once your tenancy has ended, keys can be returned in person to the Broxtowe Council Offices in Beeston or by registered post.
