Salary: £17,364 - £17,711 per annum - Grade 2. Fixed term period : 3 years.

Are you interested in earning money and at the same time gaining a nationally recognised vocational qualification?

If yes, then Broxtowe Borough Council is looking to appoint an Apprentice in our Transport and Stores team where you will have the opportunity to receive training in all aspects of light and heavy vehicle repair and maintenance. This is a fantastic opportunity to build a career within the automotive industry to work alongside a qualified Technician/Mentor learning how to carry out vehicle repairs in a safe and responsible manner.

This exciting Apprenticeship programme will be based at Kimberley Depot in Kimberley and will provide you with the opportunity to:-

  • Achieve an understanding of the fundamentals of light and heavy vehicle technologies including chassis design, engine, transmission, electrical systems, hydraulic and air braking, air suspension systems.
  • Learn the principles of vehicle diagnostics and the application of logical problem solving techniques
  • Work on a wide range of specialist local authority vehicles including Large Goods and Light Commercial vehicles including refuse freighters and sweepers.
  • Inspect and repair vehicles meeting V.O.S.A. standards
  • An understanding of Health and Safety and goods vehicle Operator Licencing regulations.  
  • Learn more about what the Council does and the services it provides for the residents of Broxtowe    

During your apprenticeship you will undertake an Institute of the Motor Industry Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician course as detailed below:

and you will also receive training to enable you to gain additional qualifications in Emergency First Aid.

Please note that as part of the Apprenticeship Programme, you will be required to visit our training provider’s Automotive Academy which is based in Derby City Centre for 15 separate weeks (Monday – Friday) throughout the 3-year duration of the course.  You will also be assigned a dedicated Development Coach who will hold regular training meetings with you within the workplace to support and guide you throughout the Apprenticeship qualification to ensure that you achieve.

The ideal candidate would be:

  • Proactive and be able to demonstrate an interest in the vehicle industry.
  • Able to work in an organised and methodical manner and demonstrate mechanical skills.
  • Have English and Maths GCSEs at Grades A to C/9-4 or equivalent
  • Someone who can represent our GREAT values as a Council
  • Apprenticeships are available to anyone aged 16 or over and there is no upper age limit.
