Bramcote Badgers Compete in National Walking Football Championships

10/06/2016 - A walking football team from Bramcote represented Nottingham Forest in the final of the National Walking Football Championships earlier this week, after winning the East Midlands qualifying event.

The Bramcote Silver Badgers, who play regularly at Chilwell Olympia Sports Centre, where set up by Broxtowe Borough Council's Sport Development Team, Broxtowe Sport, in 2012 as part of the first Walking Football sessions.

The club joined over 70 teams in five regions of the country taking part in the qualifiers and went on to make it to the National Finales at St. George's Park, the Headquarters of the England National Team. The club played a fantastic final match against Blackpool but were sadly beaten on penalties.

Terry Astill, one of the original members and organisers said:

"I have been taking part in walking football for nearly four years and I have certainly felt a benefit in my fitness levels and general wellbeing.  I have also made many new friends and the social side of the club cannot be under estimated."

The club now have around 30 regularly members who take advantage of the Council's weekly Walking Football Sessions at Chilwell Olympia every Wednesday between 2.00pm and 3.00pm.

Anyone who is interested should come along and have a go.

Walking Football is a specially modified version of the beautiful game which uses the same rules as five-a-side football, except participants are not allowed to run, only walk. The sessions are a great way for older people to keep fit, whether they are still active or returning to exercise, whilst socialising with other local people.
