Medallist of the Order of the British Empire
"Broxtowe Borough Council would like to congratulate Deputy Mayor Councillor Derek Burnett on being awarded a BEM in the Queen’s New Year Honours list. In the years that I have known him, Derek has worked tirelessly for his community, working as a Nottinghamshire Police constable for 30 years before becoming a member of the Nuthall & District Community First Response, attending over 1,500 emergency incidents. Not only that, he also acts as the councillor for Watnall and Nuthall West, trains local groups, and volunteers with the Nottingham branch of SSAFA – the armed forces charity, formerly known as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.
Derek is passionate about working in the local community, and his dedication to being there in times of need has earned him the title of ‘community hero’ among his friends and colleagues and won him the Local Hero Award at the Best of Broxtowe Borough Awards 2017.
He is a credit to the Borough of Broxtowe and a truly worthy recipient of the award."
Councillor Richard Jackson, Leader, Broxtowe Borough Council
