New Mayor Takes Office In Broxtowe Borough

17/05/2018 Broxtowe Borough has a new Mayor, after Councillor Derek Burnett BEM was installed as the 42nd Mayor at the Council’s Annual Meeting last night (16th May).

Derek, a Conservative Councillor for Watnall and Nuthall West, was joined by friends and family on this special occasion, including his wife Sonia, who will escort him on official engagements over the coming year.

Derek is a well-known face in the local community where he is a community first responder, which he won the Local Hero Award for in the 2017 Best of Broxtowe Borough Awards. He also runs a baby and toddler group with his wife and was awarded a BEM in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List 2018 for his services to the community. He spent his final day as Deputy Mayor celebrating his 69th birthday and preparing for his new role as Mayor.

Derek takes over from past Mayor (2017/18), Councillor Halimah Khaled MBE, following her successful year in office which saw her undertake 274 engagements and raise over £7000 for Wellbeing of Women.

Derek will be supporting East Midlands Ambulance Service Nuthall & District Community First Responders and Soldiers', Sailors' & Airmen's Families Association (SSAFA) during his year in office.

Councillor Michael Brown, a Conservative Councillor for Greasley, will assist Derek as the Borough’s Deputy Mayor.
