Broxtowe Website Accredited By Disability Charity

09/10/18 - BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL’S website has been accredited by disability charity Shaw Trust for being inclusive and user friendly for people with disabilities. The website has been accredited following a revamp in 2017.

The accreditation process involves over 60 hours of testing by users with a range of disabilities, as well as a series of technical assessments by digital auditors.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Jackson, said, “Online services can be a real lifeline for people with disabilities to help them keep their independence so it’s incredibly important that we make sure the Council’s website is up to standard.”

“New regulations came in to force in September which mean that public sector bodies must make their websites or mobile apps accessible. Thanks to the hard work that has gone in to gaining accreditation, the Council has already achieved this with the Shaw Trust Accreditation.”

Web accessibility means ensuring that everyone can read and understand a website regardless of ability or any impairments. To achieve this, some of the accessible features on the Council’s website include the ability to use the site using only a keyboard to aid those with motor impairments; the ability to change font size and the colour of the website for those with visual impairments as well as text which is easily understood by screen readers; and the ability to quickly skip to content for keyboard-only and screen reader users.
