Broxtowe Residents Invited To Join Virtual VE Day

Broxtowe Residents Invited To Join Virtual VE Day

27/04/20 - Broxtowe residents are being invited to join in ‘virtual’ celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day on 8th May.

“The anniversary of VE Day is such an important event and I know that many people, myself included, are very disappointed that the planned events have had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, Leader of the Council.

“We might have to stay at home at the moment but that doesn’t mean Broxtowe residents can’t still mark this momentous occasion. 75 years ago, people across Europe came together to celebrate and that community spirit can be seen today, as we support one another during the pandemic.

We may not be able to line the streets but we can still remember those who fought in the Second World War and cheering on those who continue to serve in our Armed Forces.”

Five things you can do to mark VE Day 75

  1. Dress your windows - Dress you windows in red, white and blue and with our downloadable posters - there's one for the kids to colour in too. Local people can look out for them on whilst they are outside exercising.
  2. Download our kids activity pack - It's full of ideas of fun things you can do from home, as well as information to teach them about what VE Day means.
  3. Send in photos, stories and memories - We'd love to see photos and hear stories and memories from those who experienced VE Day or stories that have been passed down in your families. Share photos with us on Facebook and Twitter and using #Broxtowe75 or by emailing press@broxtowe.gov.uk
  4. Say thank you - Leave a thank you message for those who gave so much for us on our online thank you book. If you have older friends and family who can't get online, record their messages for them
  5. The Nations Toast - At 3.00pm on Friday 8th May, there will be a Nations Toast To The Heroes Of World War II. Take part by raising a glass, cheering and clapping on your doorsteps and saying “To those who gave so much, we thank you.”
