Broxtowe Residents Invited To Commemorate VJ Day

31/07/20 - Saturday 15th August marks the 75th anniversary of victory over Japan. The Japanese surrender saw peace after six years of warfare. VJ Day offers Broxtowe residents the chance to reflect.

“VJ Day is a chance for us to take a moment to reflect on the magnitude of the second world war and what the declaration of peace would have meant to the people of Great Britain.” said Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, Leader of the Council.

Leader of the Council Councillor Milan Radulovic

“Many parallels have been drawn between the war and the current fight against Coronavirus and we have seen in the recent months that famous British community spirit that was so prevalent during the war. Whilst Coronavirus has meant that we cannot gather in our communities to commemorate VJ Day, we have a number of ways you can get involved from your own home.”

Ways for you to mark the occasion from home:

  1. Dress your windows - Dress your windows with our downloadable bunting and union jack flags or complete a postcard and pop it up in your window. Local people can look out for them on whilst they are outside exercising. Download them at
  2. Download our kids activity pack - It's full of things you can do from home with your children, as well as information about VJ Day. Download a pack at
  3. Take part in our Broxtowe Baking competition - We'd love to see photos of your bakes! Councillor Janet Patrick, Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe will judge the photos and select her favourites. Tag us in them on our social media and add the hashtag #BROXBAKE
