Stapleford dance school to get new energy-efficient heating system

10/11/22 - A dance school owner in Stapleford is “over the moon” to receive a £16k grant to help install a new energy efficient heating and air-conditioning system.

Gemma Haigh, who runs Affinity Dance School, moved into her new 96 Derby Road premises two years ago, and while a larger building has meant she’s been able to grow and offer more classes to young people and adults, they’ve struggled with no heating and very draughty windows and doors. Four women stood in front of a sign affinity

Gemma applied for a grant from the £1m Town Centre Recovery Fund, part of the £21.1m Stapleford Towns Fund, which aims to support businesses to bounce back from the pandemic and revitalise the high street.

The money will pay for improvements to the energy efficiency of the building, double glazing and an A-rated air conditioning unit for hot and cold air supply.

The grant will also fund improvements to the frontage of the building by replacing the old wooden shop front with more durable long-lasting materials. Access will also be improved at the rear of the building for pushchair and wheelchair access.

Gemma said: “The building had been empty for a while before we moved in and it needed lots of work. I’ve been able to save up and do bits and pieces over the last few years, but there’s no way I would have been able to do this level of work for at least another 5-10 years.

“I’m absolutely over the moon - it’s amazing to get this support now, it will mean so much for my students to be comfortable this winter.”

Since moving from Bramcote Leisure Centre to a high street location, Gemma’s been surprised with how much interest she’s had from local people. Her classes are now often oversubscribed.

“I hadn’t really thought about Stapleford before but once I saw the building I knew it was the right move. The high street location has turned out to be brilliant for visibility and the support from the local business community has been lovely - everyone has been so kind and friendly.

“I love the fact that we all want to have good local independent businesses in a good local community, and the Towns Fund investment will make a massive difference for us all,” she added.
