Local Celebrations for Armed Forces Day

20/06/2023 - The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Teresa Cullen, raised a specially commissioned Armed Forces Day Flag in The Square, Beeston on Monday 19 June at 11.00am to mark a week of events being held across the country.

Soldiers from Royal Engineer Works Group joined Councillor Cullen to raise the flag. The Mayor also addressed representatives from the Royal British Legion and uniformed organisations as a sign of the Borough’s support and recognition for the contributions of all those who serve or have served in His Majesty’s Armed Forces.Image of Armed Forces Day Flag Raising 2023

“I’m glad that we can have our flag raising ceremony in Beeston Square this year. Flying this flag is our way of showing support and gratitude for all the Armed Forces do,” said Councillor Teresa Cullen.

“The Armed Forces Service personnel has made huge personal sacrifices to protect the UK and its interests both overseas and on home soil. They are busy working around the world, promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and fighting terrorism. I would like to thank all of them working tirelessly to defend the County and protecting our lives no matter what we are facing.”

At the same time, local authorities, members of public, businesses and schools throughout the country also raised their own Armed Forces Day flags to honour the nation’s servicemen and women.

This year’s Armed Forces Day will take place on Saturday 24 June to honour the British Armed Forces past and present, service families, reservists and cadets. The Armed Forces Day National Event will be hosted by Cornwall Council in Falmouth this year.
