What can be done about graffiti?

Broxtowe Borough Council will only remove graffiti if it is either:

• Offensive (for example, containing language or images that are racist, homophobic, express religious intolerance, or foul language.)
• On buildings owned by Broxtowe Borough Council.

In terms of structures owned by utility and other companies (such as bus shelters, electric boxes, telephone boxes), it is the responsibility of the company which owns the structure to remove any graffiti.

Where there is graffiti on private property, it is the responsibility of the owner of the property to arrange for removal of the graffiti.  While the Council does have the power to legally require the removal of graffiti, it is recognised that the owners of structures affected in this way are victims of anti-social behaviour.  As such, the Council will not adopt a blanket approach, but, using the provisions of its Enforcement Policy will consider each case on its merits.
