Smoke Control Areas

A Smoke Control Area is one where you can’t emit smoke from a chimney unless you’re burning authorised fuel or using exempt appliances like burners or stoves. If you break these rules you can be issiued with a  financial penalty - £175 for the first occasion and £300 for second or third occasions.  You can be issued with a financial penalty of £1,000 for buying unauthorised fuels.  Even if you do have an exempt apliance and burn authorised fuel, you can aslo cause a statutory nuisance - please see our nuisnace investigation pages for more information..

All of the Borough of Broxtowe is designated as a smoke control area and so it is important that residents ensure they are compliant with the regulations.
