How We Use Social Media

Following, Liking and Sharing

We carefully choose who we follow, like and share content from but we cannot follow, like or share everything requested or received.

We sometimes follow, like or share content we think is of interest or benefit to our residents and customers, but this does not mean that we endorse the originating person or organisation.

Monitoring

We try to respond quickly to the questions and queries we receive on social media.

Our social media accounts are monitored during office hours, Monday to Friday - so we can't usually respond to questions asked outside these hours (though we'll reply to questions sent during evenings or at weekends as soon as we can).

If your query is serious, urgent, or involves personal details, we advise you to contact Customer Services.

Acceptable Use of Social Media

We welcome your comments but may remove any posts that do not adhere to our guidance on the acceptable use of Broxtowe Borough Council's social media pages.

What you can expect from the Council

The Council will aim to respond to any questions or requests for factual information, although the Council will not report or comment on any political matter.

The Council may 'follow' or 'like' other accounts based on their relevance and usefulness, although this does not mean the Council endorses any individual, organisation or any content they publish on social media.

The Council will only 'retweet' or 'share' other users' messages as long as they are non-commercial and where the Council believes the message will be helpful or of use to its own followers. The sharing of other users' content does not mean that the Council endorses any individual, organisation or the content they produce.

Using our social media accounts

Most online communities have their own rules and guidelines, which we will always follow. We also reserve the right to remove any contributions, without notification, that break the rules or guidelines of the relevant community or any of the following:

  • Do not post messages that are unlawful, libelous, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, intimidating, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented or racially offensive.

  • Do not swear.

  • Do not post content copied from elsewhere, for which you do not own the copyright.

  • Do not post the same message, or very similar messages, more than once (also called "spamming").

  • Do not publish your, or anyone else's, personal information, such as contact details.

  • Do not publish an individual member of the publics' or Council employees' name.

  • Do not advertise commercial products or services.

  • Do not impersonate someone else.

  • Do not discuss ongoing legal proceedings.

The above list is not exhaustive and will be updated as necessary. We will also remove or ban any user who continues to post comments such as those listed above or encourages others to post such comments.

Pre-Election Period Information

In the six week period leading up to an election (such as a local, Parliamentary election or similar), Councils have to be careful not to do or say anything that could be seen in any way to support any political party or candidate.

The Council will continue to publish important service announcements using social media during the pre-election period but may have to remove responses if they are overtly party political.
