Reapplying for your postal vote

Changes to the law mean that postal voters will now need to reapply for their postal vote every 3 years.

Anyone who has had a postal vote for over 3 years will need to reapply by 31 January 2026.  If a new application is not received, the postal vote will expire and electors will need to vote in person at their local polling station unless they complete a new application form.

How will I know if I need to reapply?

We will be contacting all postal voters who need to reapply.  Correspondence will be sent either by post or by email from broxtowe.borough.council.electoral.services@notifications.service.gov.uk.

What will I need to do?

You must complete a new postal vote application as soon as possible.  If you do not reapply, your postal vote will be cancelled.

The easiest way to reapply is online.  If you are unable to apply online, you can download a paper application form, or contact Electoral Services to request a form.

What information will I need to provide?

As well as your name and address you will need to provide:

  • your national insurance number,
  • the address that your postal vote should be sent to if different from your home address,
  • your signature - this must be your normal, handwritten signature and not a digital signature.  If applying online, you will need to write your signature on a plain piece of paper and upload a clear photograph of your signature with your application.

Why do I need to provide my national insurance number?

National insurance numbers are used to confirm your identity when you apply to vote by post.  If you do not provide this, or the verification checks fail, we will have to ask you to provide further information to enable us to confirm your identity.

If you cannot find your national insurance number, you can get help here.

What if I can't provide a signature?

If you are unable to provide a consistent signature due to disability or an inability to read or write, you can apply for a postal vote waiver.  You can apply for a postal vote waiver online or contact Electoral Services for an application form.

I don't want to vote by post anymore, what should I do?

You can cancel your postal vote in writing either by email to postalvotes@broxtowe.gov.uk or by sending a letter to:

Electoral Services, Broxtowe Borough Council, Council Offices, Foster Avenue, Beeston, Nottingham, NG9 1AB

You should include your full name and address and your date of birth in any correspondence.

Please be aware that you will need to show photo ID before voting at a polling station.  More information about voter ID, what ID can be used and how to apply for free voter ID, should you need it, can be found here
