Broxtowe Borough Council Celebrated as Disability Confident Leader
The reaccreditation of the award, which the Council first achieved in 2022, having been a Disability Confident Employer since 2016, highlights its ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive, and accessible workplace for disabled employees and fostering greater equality across its services.
Achieving Leader status demonstrates that Broxtowe not only meets but actively champions best practice in recruiting, retaining, and developing disabled colleagues.
The accreditation follows rigorous independent validation of the Council’s policies, culture and the improvements made to break down barriers and support meaningful, long-term employment opportunities.
Portfolio Holder for Resources and Personnel Policy, Councillor Greg Marshall said: “So often inclusion can be a tick box exercise. Our Disability Confident Leader status shows that we are a Council that is putting words into action, ensuring that we are not just an accessible employer, but that we also attract and retain the best people to deliver services for residents and lead by example to other businesses in the Borough."
- The Council has introduced a range of measures as part of its Disability Confident journey, including:
- Introducing ‘Wellbeing Passports’ for employees with disabilities or neurodiverse conditions.
- Developing a Neurodiversity Policy to support employees.
- Reviewing its Recruitment Strategy and introducing initiatives to increase recruitment of harder to reach groups, including those with disabilities.
- Attending Disability Jobs Fairs in conjunction with the DWP.
- Disability Work Experience placements.
- Neurodiversity and Mental Health Training for all managers.
- Introducing and training employee Mental Health First Aiders.
