Broxtowe Borough Council Awarded More Than £1.6 Million To Improve Council Housing Energy Efficiency

02/06/25 - Broxtowe Borough Council have been awarded more than £1.6 million in grant funding by the Government to improve the energy efficiency of Council housing in the Borough.

The funding is provided through the Warm Homes Social Housing Fund (Wave 3) following a successful bid led by the Midland Net Zero Hub’s Consortium. The grant has been match funded by the Council, with a total of £4.5 million planned to be invested into improving Council housing energy efficiency over the three-year scheme (2025-2028).

Previously, the Council was successful in receiving around £1 million of grant funding under Wave 2.1 of the Social Housing Decarbonisation Scheme, which has been used to install external wall insulation to over 80 hard to treat solid wall properties, mainly in a conservation area in Eastwood. These properties had poor EPC ratings of E or D but will now achieve EPC C ratings when complete. The total energy savings delivered through this project are anticipated to be 500,000 kWh.
The new funding will be used to install measures such as solar panels, external and cavity wall insulation and loft insulation, and will be targeted at homes that have EPC ratings of D - G. It is anticipated over 350 homes can receive energy efficiency improvement under this scheme.

Portfolio Holder for Housing, Councillor Vanessa Smith said, ‘We’re delighted to have been awarded more funding to continue our work on improving the energy efficiency of our housing stock. Not only does this help us as a Council to bring down domestic emissions and work towards our climate change targets, but this will really benefit our tenants by bringing down their monthly bills. We know everyone is feeling the pinch. We’re really looking forward to delivering this project which will create positive impacts for both our tenants and environment.’

Domestic emissions from gas and electricity usage in homes across the Borough made up 32% of the total carbon emissions in 2022. Improving the energy efficiency of Council houses will help to reduce the Borough’s carbon emissions. In addition, energy savings will result in lower bills for residents and improve thermal comfort.
Projects such as this form part of the Council’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions as outlined within the Climate Change and Green Futures Strategy 2023-2027 and its commitment in the Housing Strategy to making homes more energy efficient.
