Free money and energy-saving advice for Broxtowe residents

21/11/2025 - Households in Broxtowe can save money on their energy bills through free support from community charity Groundwork Five Counties, as part of Citizens Advice Broxtowe’s Financial Resilience Programme.

Groundwork’s Green Doctors are energy efficiency experts that review household bills to find the best tariffs and make savings, advise on benefits people may be entitled to, and encourage positive behaviours that save energy. On average, a household saves £325 a year by following the Green Doctor’s advice.A Green Doctor and a resident

All advice is tailored to the household’s situation and needs. This could include identifying and tackling damp and mould, retrofit advice on heating pumps, solar panels, wall/loft insulation before or after installation, providing in-depth understanding of heating systems, and much more.

The Green Doctor will also install free energy saving measures and can signpost other services such as fuel vouchers, government grants, debt advice, mental health support, and more.

Available to all Broxtowe residents, the service is especially helpful to those who are on a low income, living with debt, have poor housing conditions or those who live with a physical or mental health condition. It is available to homeowners, private and social renters, and any other living situation.

Lee Doohan, Delivery & Partnership Manager at Groundwork says, “We often can help people who have been experiencing real hardship. Recently, we supported a person who had a £3,000 energy debt and was going to be cut off.

“The Green Doctor negotiated with the energy supplier for an interim agreement and the installation of a prepayment meter. We provided top-up vouchers to ensure they had electricity and gas, installed low energy bulbs and draught excluders, and gave them a heated blanket to stay extra warm.

“We provided advice to heat their home efficiently, as a cold home is more likely to develop mould and that is incredibly dangerous to people’s health. Lastly, we referred them for further debt advice with another service, and they are doing much better now.”
