‘Wonderful Women of Broxtowe’ celebrated in exhibition at the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum

27/11/2025 - The Wonderful Women of Broxtowe photographic exhibition, now on display at the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum, showcases women from communities across the Borough, and the invaluable contributions they make within them.

Alongside a portrait of each woman are three words they would use to describe themselves, a short autobiography about the role they play in their communities, and an inspirational statement to be passed on to others.A selection of portraits from the exhibition at the museum

Created by local photographers Lesley Grand-Scutton and Anne Glew, The Wonderful Women of Broxtowe draws attention to the societal shift of the roles of women and the success that many women have had in a number of different fields and industries; it also highlights the fact that there is still work to be done to address gender inequalities and systemic bias.

Lesley said, “Using my photography skills and powers of persuasion to tell a story is really important to me. This latest project gave me the opportunity to photograph inspirational women from the local community in their own environment, but the biggest challenge  was getting them to summarise their life story in less than 200 words!”

Anne says, “Working on this project gave me the opportunity to meet and talk with women from various backgrounds, all of whom were modest about their achievements and positive contributions to society.”

The exhibition was partly funded with £300 from the Council’s C-City partnership.

The exhibition is available to view now up until Saturday 20 December, during museum opening hours, 10:00am – 4:00pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
