Broxtowe puts residents’ voices first as engagement shows overwhelming opposition to proposed LGR options

24/10/25 - 12,507 residents have taken part in an engagement survey undertaken by Broxtowe Borough Council about proposed local government reorganisation in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to listening to the community by supporting both an online county-wide survey, which ran over the summer, as well as taking steps to ensure residents could be heard by posting the survey, along with some additional questions to every household in the Borough.

Two public engagement events also took place in Beeston and Eastwood.

As part of the additional questions, residents were asked to state if they supported or did not support both Option 1b and Option 1e, or if they did not support any of the options. 71% stated that they did not support any of the options.

In the county-wide element of the survey, 63% disagreed or strongly disagreed with the proposal to the nine existing Councils with two councils to run local government across the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire area.

Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, Leader of the Council said: “The Council regularly runs engagement surveys and the rate of responses to this exercise is far above what we would normally expect. The results could not be clearer - residents overwhelmingly expressed that they do not support the proposed changes. This whole process needs to be paused so that proper consideration can be given to a service-led review of local government.

Councillor Greg Marshall, Deputy Leader of the Council added: “We promised to put residents at the heart of decision-making, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. Our residents’ views matter and this process has shown the strength of feeling in our community. We’re proud that we gave people the chance to have their voices heard, and we remain committed to making decisions with our community, not just for them.”

Ahead of the Government’s submission deadline of 28 November, an extraordinary Council meeting will be held on Wednesday 26 November to give Members an opportunity to consider the results and debate the options. Broxtowe’s final position will be determined at a meeting of the Cabinet on Thursday 27 November.

The full engagement report is available on the Council’s LGR webpage.
