Explore Lawrence Country with Museum’s Wellbeing Walks

02/10/2025 - Combining gentle exercise with the rich local heritage of the surrounding countryside, the country of Lawrence’s heart, the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum’s monthly Wellbeing Walks are a great way to get outdoors and explore this autumn/winter.

While you don’t need to be interested in Lawrence to join, for those wanting to learn more about him and the place he called home in his formative years, the Museum’s Wellbeing Walks are a fantastic opportunity to do so. Led by Lawrence experts from the Museum, walks visit key locations that shaped the young writer, providing a unique insight into his early life.A wellbeing walk outside the D.H. October’s Wellbeing Walk will take attendees to Memorial Wood in Brinsley, the mine which Lawrence’s father once worked, also passing Eastwood Hall, the home of the Walker family who, with the Barbers, ran many of the mines in Nottinghamshire.

Wellbeing Walks provide a friendly space and an opportunity to meet and socialise with new people in the community but are also an excellent way to get some exercise with old pals. Free tea, coffee and refreshments are also provided in the Museum gift shop afterwards, where chats between friends old and new carry on.

Previous walkers have come to love the community so much so that they’ve gone on to become volunteers at the Museum, even volunteering to help on the Wellbeing Walks themselves.

The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum’s Wellbeing Walks take place on the first Tuesday of every month, setting off at 10:00am from the Museum at Lawrence’s first home at 8a Victoria Street, Eastwood, NG16 3AW.

The next Wellbeing Walks will take place on:

  •       Tuesday 7 October, 10:00am
  •       Tuesday 4 November, 10:00am
  •       Tuesday 2 December, 10:00am

Museum and Collections Officer, Carolyn Melbourne, said, “The area has such a rich heritage, and many of the people who come on the walks offer their own insight into this. I always end up learning something new. There’s no need to be an expert though, on Lawrence or history, we are an informal group and it’s just nice to get together in the open air.”

Portfolio Holder for Health and Leisure said, “The Museum’s Wellbeing Walks are always popular among the local community and remain well attended, even throughout the colder months. It’s a fantastic way to get outside and get some fresh air while exploring some of our wonderful countryside and local heritage with faces old and new.”
