Earlier this week, the main findings from the UK's first Audit of 'skateable spaces' were published by Skateboard GB, the National Governing Body for skateboarding, supported by Sport England.  The study assessed more than 2,000 sites across the UK and concluded that the factors that most strongly contribute to skatepark users' perceptions of quality included: construction in concrete, close involvement with local user groups at each stage, and long-term investment in events, sessions and positive custodianship. All of these have been the case for Stapleford, making the new skatepark a national exemplar.

The skatepark at Pasture Road was kindly funded by a £100,000 grant from the FCC Community Action Fund alongside funding from the Stapleford Towns Fund, plus donations from 202 people to the Stapleford Skatepark Crowdfunder UK campaign, which had match-funding from Sport England.  The final design followed more than two years of extensive consultation, including four in-person events, two online surveys and several user group meetings between the team at Canvas and local BMXers, skateboarders and inline and quad roller-skaters, all together engaging more than 300 people.
