Exclusive artefacts on show for first Museum Late at Lawrence’s birthplace

13/03/2026 - The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum will be hosting its first ever Museum Late this March, welcoming two recent finds relating to Lawrence’s life alongside free entry to explore his first home by gaslight.

Guests will be joined by Director of the D.H. Lawrence Research Centre at the University of Nottingham, Dr. Andrew Harrison at 6:00pm, to present two recent archival finds relating to Lawrence’s early life and talk through their significance.A woman in the museum parlour by gaslight

Opening for three extra hours in the evening, Museum Late offers the chance to view the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum’s charming rooms by gaslight in the evening, which is an opportunity that comes just a few times a year.

Visitors will be able to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a complimentary glass of prosecco or cup of tea on arrival. It’s also a good chance to see the fresh new Lawrence mural on Victoria Street, completed in early March.

Join the Museum Team on Friday 27 March, 4:00pm – 7:00pm.

Museum and Collections Officer, Carolyn Melbourne, said, “The atmosphere in the historic rooms is particularly special in the evenings, when you can get the full effect of the gaslight. This museum late also offers a rare opportunity to speak to Dr. Andrew Harrison, whose knowledge about D.H. Lawrence is second to none. Hearing his insights into Lawrence are always a real treat.”

The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum is where the literary legend was born on 11 September 1885. Only 30 minutes from Nottingham city centre, the museum is a must see for fans of literature, and for those wanting to delve deeper into Nottingham’s literary heritage.

Step back in time to experience the traditional Victorian wash house, see the parlour; a room only for special guests, and have a wander around the parental and other bedrooms. The museum’s permanent exhibition features items from Lawrence’s family and even paintings created by the author himself.
