New Leisure Centre works to begin following funding approval
The decision follows approval of the plans at Planning Committee back in January.
The new replacement leisure centre will provide modern, accessible facilities designed to support health, wellbeing and community activity for residents across the area.
The proposed development includes a 25 metre, six lane swimming pool with viewing gallery, a 20 metre teaching pool and spectator area, a spin studio, a large fitness suite, exercise hall, changing facilities and office space, creating a welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities.
The new centre will replace the existing leisure centre, ensuring long-term, high-quality provision for the community. As the new centre will be located on the existing car park area, some alternative temporary car parking arrangements will be provided.
Solar panels will be installed on the centre roof to help reduce the carbon footprint of the building.
Councillor Teresa Cullen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Health said: “This decision marks the start of what promises to be a very exciting project for the future of health and leisure provision in the Borough. Local residents, stakeholders and user groups have been at the heart of the planning process to make sure that the new leisure centre meets the needs of the local community for years to come. I’m very much looking forward to seeing the works begin.”
Adrian Turner, Director of Client Success at ReCreation, the Development Consultant for the new facility said: “ReCreation is delighted to be working alongside Broxtowe Borough Council on the delivery of this vital project. This new centre will provide high-quality, modern facilities that will play a key role in supporting a healthier, more active local community. We are so proud to be supporting the Council in enhancing wellbeing facilities for its residents – and creating a destination ‘third place’ that will benefit residents across the Borough for now and the next generation.”
The project has been shaped through consultation with local residents, stakeholders and user groups with the local Olympic swimmer, Rebecca Adlington, formally backing the project during a visit in 2024.
