Major incident declared in Nottinghamshire due to flooding

Nottinghamshire and Nottingham Local Resilience Forum has taken the decision due to rising river levels along the River Trent, which is yet to peak. 

Latest forecasts are currently showing that peaks along the River Trent could come close to the highest levels on record from the year 2000 and so Nottinghamshire County Council and its partner agencies are advising residents in areas along the Trent Valley to be prepared for flooding.

Key tributaries which feed in to the River Trent, including the River Derwent, the River Soar and the River Dove, have already reached their peaks and high water levels will now pass down the Trent, which is likely to lead to the flooding to properties and roads.

Residents who live in the flood risk areas are being asked to ensure they have preparations in place in case they are asked to evacuate. Councils, emergency services and the Environment Agency have been providing emergency support to communities impacted and will continue to provide support across the county. A number of key roads are closed due to flooding at present including the A6097 at Gunthorpe, Wilford Lane at Compton Acres and the A617 at Kelham and we are asking residents to consider avoiding these areas unless it is for essential travel. Key advice includes:

• Only travelling if necessary in the flood areas.
• Don’t ignore a flood warning or a road closure sign.
• Do not to enter flood water in case of hidden hazards such as lifted manhole covers.
• Staying away from swollen rivers and flood water.
• Looking out for vulnerable friends, relatives and neighbours.
• Check road closure information on the county council’s website.
