Referendums can also be held on a local, regional or national level. Some referendums, such as one to gauge opinion on whether we should have an elected Mayor for the borough, must be requested via a petition signed by 5% of the electorate. Each year, the Electoral Registration Officer publishes a notice confirming what the electorate figure is.

BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL
LOCAL AUTHORITIES (REFERENDUMS) (PETITIONS) (ENGLAND) REGULATIONS 2011
Petition for Referendum on Elected Mayor – Verification Number
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that under the provisions of Regulation 4(1) of the above regulations, I have published the verification number (that is, the number that is equal to 5 per cent of the number of local government electors shown in the electoral register of Broxtowe having effect for the period beginning on 15 February 2026). The verification number is 4,252.
This number will have effect for deciding before 1 April 2027 whether petitions are valid which are presented for a referendum to be held on whether Broxtowe should have an elected mayor. If the number of local government electors shown in the electoral register having effect for the period beginning 16 February 2027 is less than the current total, the 5 per cent verification number will then reduce proportionately.
I am Broxtowe Borough Council’s Proper Officer for this purpose; any petition should be delivered to me at the address below.
