Council uses new powers to seek tenant for former Old Rock pub
The premises is undergoing a full refurbishment to bring the property up to a minimum lettable standard, including new electrics, plumbing and toilets, replastering and repainting, new windows as well as having the exterior rendering redone – thanks to a grant from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
Applications are now open for businesses, community organisations and other potential occupiers to make a bid for a minimum of 5 years lease rights. Applicants can offer imaginative new uses for the building and there may be additional financial incentives for any outstanding businesses wanting to establish in Stapleford.

Broxtowe continue to the lead the way nationally on High Street Rental Auctions, having been one of only eleven councils on the Government’s HSRA early adopter programme, and the first to serve a HSRA notice, in Stapleford.
Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Asset Management, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, said, “High Street Rental Auctions have given councils powers to rejuvenate our high streets that we’ve never had before, and it’s imperative that we take the initiative and begin to make use of these powers right away to support local business and increase footfall in our town centres.
“The Old Rock has long been vacant and had become a bit of a burden on Stapleford, especially with the premises being in such a prominent position in the town. I’m extremely pleased that we’ve been able to move forward so quickly with the HSRA process on this property and now we can look forward to the premises being a thriving hub in the town centre, which I’m sure many residents will be looking forward to”
High Street Rental Auctions (HSRAs) are a new permissive power for local authorities, granted by MHCLG, to require landlords to rent out persistently vacant commercial properties to new tenants such as local businesses or community groups, which Broxtowe Borough Council are currently undertaking in Stapleford and Eastwood. Local authorities will be able to take action to fill long term vacant properties by auctioning lease rights for up to 5 years.
