Local Hero Honoured With Broxtowe’s Highest Award

14/5/2026 - Shafique Fazal, who has devoted years of supporting the people of Broxtowe, was admitted as Freeman of Broxtowe on the evening of 13 May, the highest honours that Broxtowe Borough Council can bestow.

Shafique first moved to Nottingham for his studies, before settling in Beeston, where his passion for community development started in 1999. Since then, he has become a cornerstone of the Broxtowe community, working timelessly to support the diverse residents through education, faith, and social cohesion.Shafique Fazal

As one of the founders of Beeston Muslim Centre, Shafique has played a key role in supporting the Broxtowe’s Muslim community, as well as promoting community cohesion between the many different communities who call Broxtowe their home. His dedication has helped building understanding, unity, and a shared sense of belonging across the Borough.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Shafique said: “It is a great privilege to be named Freeman of Broxtowe. I am deeply honoured and grateful to the community that has given me so much over the years. This recognition reflects the collective efforts of so many people who work every day to make Broxtowe a welcoming and inclusive place. I remain committed to continuing this work and supporting our community in any way I can.”

Shafique’s unwavering dedication to the people of Broxtowe makes him an exemplary ambassador for the borough and a truly worthy recipient of the title of Freeman of the Borough.
