Colliers Wood receives Green Flag recognition for 17th consecutive year
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under contract from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
Earlier this year, recovered mining artefacts including a mine car and pulley wheel salvaged from Moorgreen Colliery, were carefully restored and painted in their original underground light grey. These were installed with an accompanying memorial to the 79 miners who sadly lost their lives at the site along with an interpretation board.
Resurfacing of the main circular route round the site was also recently completed, improving accessibility and enabling year-round use.
Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, Councillor Tyler Marsh, said, “Colliers Wood shows what can be achieved when we regenerate former industrial land while respecting the people and stories that shaped it. Our recent memorial to the 79 miners who lost their lives here ensures their memory lives on, while improvements to the site are making it more accessible and better protected for future generations.
“Retaining our Green Flag Award for the site for the 17th consecutive year is a remarkable achievement and one that we’re immensely proud of given the sites cultural significance to the local community. It’s testament to the hard work and collaboration of our teams and the Friends of Colliers Wood Group who maintain the site for the public to enjoy.”
Chairman of Friends of Colliers Wood, Alan Green, said, “I’m delighted that Colliers Wood has once again retained its UK Green Flag status – a testament to the commitment and efforts of Broxtowe Borough Council and the Friends of Colliers Wood, whose work ensures our local nature reserve remains a valued space for both the community and nature.”
