Discover the history of Bennerley Viaduct with new free storytelling sessions

A new addition to Broxtowe Borough Council’s events calendar, the storytelling sessions at Bennerley Viaduct offer a unique opportunity to discover more about the iconic industrial landmark with spectacular views across the Erewash valley, 18 metres above the ground.

The sessions, adapted from the poem, takes the crowd on a journey through the viaduct’s inception, its role in the booming local coal mining industry, its decline and subsequent rescue and transformation by the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct. Volunteers from the Friends will also be on hand throughout the afternoon to give free guided tours of the site.

Adding to the experience, live music and street performers will be wondering around the grounds with industrial and railway themed music and performances.

Event details:

• Sunday 16 September 2026.
• 1:00pm – 4:00pm, performances from 2:00pm.
• Bennerley Viaduct, Shilo Way, Awsworth, Nottingham NG16 2BF.

There will also be the chance to explore the new visitor centre and café on site, funded by Kimberley Means Business, which will be serving coffee, cake, and a special event menu.

Portfolio Holder for Health and Leisure, Councillor Teresa Cullen, said, “This is a unique event and opportunity for our residents to experience the Iron Giant in a special way, and so I’m proud that we’ve been able to partner with the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct to put this on to residents free of charge.

“Beeston Players are such a fantastic group, always finding new and inventive ways to bring different stories to life and this will be no different - I’m sure this will be a popular event!”

Bennerley Viaduct is a marvel of British engineering, being the longest of two remaining iron-wrought viaducts still standing, stretching over 400 metres across the Erewash Valley, connecting Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
