Explore the meaning of home at new D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum exhibition

18/08/2026 - The museum’s latest exhibition, 'From Home' showcases what home means to different families from across the globe, in partnership with museums and universities locally and in Beijing.

Students from the Beijing Language and Culture University and representatives from 93 Courtyard Museum (Beijing) have kickstarted the exhibition with immersive stories from their respective homes – invoking visitor’s senses and detailing key objects and events.Paper forms at the exhibition to write your own experiences of home

Visitors are encouraged to take part themselves by sharing their own memories from home, with the aim of growing the exhibition to be displayed elsewhere.

Neville Stankley, Senior Lecturer of Museum and Heritage modules at Nottingham Trent University, said, “The idea of this exhibition is that every family has a story; we want those stories to be shared and handed down through the generations. I would love the residents of Eastwood to come along and share theirs with us."

Museum and Collections Officer, Carolyn Melbourne, said, “I hope that this exhibition will encourage residents to come and share their stories of home with us. We at the museum are keen to capture and preserve these personal and meaningful parts of the area’s history. Come and see us at the museum to join the conversation.”

The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum is where the literary legend was born on 11 September 1885. Only 30 minutes from Nottingham city centre, the museum is a must see for fans of literature, and for those wanting to delve deeper into Nottingham’s literary heritage.

The exhibition will be available to view from Friday 19 June – Saturday 18 July in the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum Gallery during museum opening hours, Thursday – Saturday 10:00am – 4:00pm.

The exhibition has been created through a partnership between Beijing Language and Culture University, 93 Courtyard Museum, Nottingham Trent University, Walks of Life Museum, and the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum.

Step back in time to experience the traditional Victorian wash house, see the parlour; a room only for special guests, and have a wander around the parental and other bedrooms. The museum’s permanent exhibition features items from Lawrence’s family and even paintings created by the author himself.
