Stapleford school children step out to officially open new safer road crossing
Funded through the Stapleford Towns Fund’s active travel programme, the project includes a brand-new Puffin crossing equipped with smart sensor technology to detect pedestrians outside Albany Junior School. 
The project builds on previous active travel investments in the area, including the Ilkeston Road Cycle Hub, Cycle Training Track, Pasture Road Recreation Ground path improvements and Skate Park.
Alongside the smart crossing, work also includes:

Enhanced junction safety with two new tactile crossing points at the Kennedy Drive / Pasture Road junction.

Expanded crossing space with an enlarged central crossing island at the Hickings Lane / Pasture Road junction.

Extensive resurfacing of pedestrian footpaths along Pasture Road to encourage walking and wheeling.

Better community connections through calmer traffic speeds and safer pedestrian routes linking Hickings Lane, Stapleford Community Pavilion, Pasture Road Recreation Ground and the Skatepark.
To further extend safety coverage across the neighbourhood, the local school crossing patrol will relocate to Hickings Lane to assist pupils and parents on their daily school run.
Laura Goffin, Headteacher at Albany Junior School said, "The opening of this new crossing is a fantastic development for our entire school community. The safety of our pupils on their journey to and from school is always our top priority, and these improvements give parents and children the confidence to walk and wheel safely every day. We are extremely grateful to the Stapleford Towns Fund and Broxtowe Borough Council for making Pasture Road a safer place for our families."
Ian Jowett, Chair of Stapleford Towns Fund, said, "We’re so pleased to see this crossing officially open to improve safety on this particularly busy and challenging section of road. It’s something we know local people have wanted for a long time and we’re pleased to have funded it through the Towns Fund."
Looking ahead, further active travel options are currently being explored to continue expanding walking and cycling connections across Stapleford.
