Reading Group 'The Christening'

Dr Andrew Harrison (University of Nottingham) will lead this reading group on D. H. Lawrence's 'The Christening', a fascinating early short story set in Eastwood, exploring the themes of illegitimacy, shame and rebellion. 'The Christening', depicts the daughter of a retired miner, who has brought shame on her family by having a child outside marriage. Lawrence reverses traditional moral norms by presenting passion and the daughter's physical affection for her child as vital, in contrast to the distorting patriarchal perspectives of her father and the clergyman who comes in secret to the family's home in order to baptise it.
