Beeston Rylands gains five new hedgehog habitats thanks to Notts Green Rewards!

Green Rewards is a free platform where users can accumulate points for completing sustainable actions such as recycling, walking and reducing the amount of energy they use. These points can then be exchanged for vouchers and prizes with options including £20 gift vouchers for M&S, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Argos, Aldi and Asda. Every six months the top performing ward on Green Rewards gets to choose from a selection of biodiversity prizes on offer.

As the ward with the most points, Beeston Rylands residents were given the choice of bird/bat box installation, insect hotels/bee houses, hedgehog hotels or hibernaculum for amphibians and reptiles to vote for and 52% voted for hedgehog hotels.

The five habitat houses were successfully added at suitable locations at Hetley Pearson Recreation Ground, Weir Fields Crescent Recreation Ground and Leyton Crescent Recreation Ground.

The Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Barbara Carr joined Deputy Mayor and Ward Councillor, Councillor Sarah Webb, Councillor Shaun Dannheimer Ward Councillor for Beeston Rylands and members of the Council’s Environment Team, to help put these in situ.

Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, Councillor Tyler Marsh said, “Congratulations to the residents of Beeston Rylands! It’s great to see residents getting involved in the Green Rewards platform, making small changes to their lifestyles that add up to big positive changes for the local environment.

Unfortunately, populations of these wonderful spikey mammals have declined between 30-75% since 2000, by providing these additional habitat boxes, five new safe and sheltered places have been created allowing local populations to nest and/or hibernate in, helping to maintain and increase their populations.

Broxtowe residents can sign up to the Green Rewards platform and join over 3,700 Broxtowe residents who have avoided almost 900 tonnes CO2e (that’s a massive 900 hot air balloons worth!) so far through actions taken via the app since its launch. Green Rewards is available on desktop (Opens in a new tab) or residents can download the app by searching for ‘Notts; Green Rewards’ in the app store.
