What can the Community Governance Review Change?
A Community Governance Review can make a number of changes to parish governance when there is clear evidence to do so.
It can make changes to parish areas including:
- changes to boundaries between parishes
- mergers of town or more parishes
- creating a new parish out of part of one or more existing parishes
It can make changes to electoral arrangements within parish areas including:
- changes to the number of parish councillors
- introducing or changing parish warding arrangements
- the name of a parish
- grouping together a number of parishes under a common parish council
Why has Broxtowe Borough Council decided to undertake a review now?
We have a legal duty to ensure that community governance arrangements:
- reflect the identities and interests of the community in the area
- are effective and convenient (this relates to the ability of parishes to provide services for its residents)
Any proposed changes will need to be considered in that light.
The Council has identified a number of potential changes which could be made to parish boundaries to, in its opinion, bring about more cohesive communities. Any changes to parishes will be in place for the elections in 2027.
How does a Community Governance Review Work?
Between now and the end of March the Council will be asking town and parish councils. local residents and organisations to give us their views on the options to be put out for consultation, as well as any other changes (including no change) they would like to see considered in the review.
We will publish details of all representations received. A Task and Finish Group of Borough councillors will consider them and put forward a set of draft recommendations to the Governance, Audit and Standards Committee for public consultation as appropriate.
The Task and Finish Group will then consider the detailed results of the second public consultation and make final recommendations to a meeting of Broxtowe Borough Council. Following the decisions of the Council we will make the necessary legal Order and the take other steps required to implement them.
How can I make representations?
Representations can be made in writing and addressed to The Head of Administrative Services, Broxtowe Borough Council, Council Offices, Foster Avenue, Beeston, Nottingham, NG9 1AB or by email to cgr@broxtowe.gov.uk.
Representations must be made by 31 March 2024.
